The Fighter deep-sea manned submersible is the core research and development task of the 13th Five-Year Plan of China. On October 10th,2010, the Fighter set sail from Sanya, Hainan Province for the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean for a deep-sea test mission of 10,000 meters.It breaks the 10,000-meters barrier for the first time on October 27th and set a new China manned deep-sea driving record of 10909 meters. On November,13th, it finished the joint operation of the world’first manned submersible and lander on the seabed 10,000 meters and broadcast live video time to the whole society. On 28th, the Fighter, a manned submersible with a depth of 10,000 meters, has successfully completed a deep-sea test mission of 10,000 meters and returned to Sanya.
The titanium alloy team of the institute of the Metal research, China Academy of Science has built the world`s largest and most manned submersible capsule for Fighter using the self-invented titanium alloy Ti62A new material.
The development of the deep-sea manned capsule has greatly promoted the improvement of titanium alloy industrial capacity and equipment manufacturing technology in China. High strength and high toughness titanium alloy ingot size, the width and the thickness of plate, titanium alloy hemispheric thickness, the forging section and weight, titanium alloy electron beam welding thickness and other technical indicators have broken the original domestic record and close to the limit capacity of the equipment.The technology of electron beam welding and heat treatment of super-thick and high-strength titanium alloy has achieved technological leap-forward. These transformation and promotion of this manufacturing capabilities will significantly improve the application level of titanium alloys in the fields of naval ships, marine engineering and petrochemical industry in China. This new technologies can be promoted and applied in other titanium alloys, promoting the industrial application of titanium alloy on a larger scale, and speeding up the pace of the industry towards the high-end of the industrial chain.
